Nordhavn Launches First New 625

Hull number one of the new Nordhavn 625 series was launched and successfully sea-trialed near the South Coast yard in Taiwan in December. It’s now on its way to the Nordhavn headquarters in Dana Point, California, where it will be commissioned soon and delivered to its owners, a couple from Nevada.

The new 625 fits right in with the Nordhavn fleet of long-range cruisers that has only been growing in number and reputation since the company’s 40-footer cruised around the world in 2001 and 2002. Its hull is based on the Nordhavn 60, with a nod to the 55 and 63, that were some of Nordhavn’s most popular models.

A while ago, Nordhavn decided to introduce updates on existing models and refresh and modernize what has worked well in the past. Indeed, Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s design chief, said, “Doing an update would provide us with another derivative outstanding performer.”

The 625 has more contemporary lines, and seems lighter and brighter, than previous models. The flybridge and the windows in the salon are larger, and there’s more seating on the foredeck. For accommodations, it has three cabins, two below and one behind the wheelhouse (a location favored by experienced cruising owners).

Power on the first hull comes from a single 325-hp John Deere. That fuel-efficient engine, combined with the Nordhavn’s 2,250-gallon fuel capacity, should be sufficient to take the new owners just about anywhere they want to go.

The 625 is a production boat, and Nordhavn is using its experience with its smaller 41 and 51 production models, made in Turkey. It comes with a lot of standard features that experienced cruisers have learned to value. At the same time, there’s room for custom touches so each owner can introduce their personal styles.
