The Best Rum Punch: Sunshine’s on Nevis

If you haven’t been to Sunshine’s on Nevis, it seems that you’re missing something. In fact, the people at Carib Journal say that the Killer Bee there is “the greatest rum punch in the Caribbean.”

And all this time I thought that a Painkiller at Foxy’s on Jost Van Dike in the BVI was pretty good. But then I, and I suspect a lot of you, haven’t been to Sunshine’s yet.

In person, Sunshine is Llewellyn Caines, and he’s been running Sunshine’s Beach Bar & Grill for the past 25 years. It’s on Pinney’s Beach on the west end of Nevis, a short walk from the Four Seasons Resort there. And he’s legendary for his disposition and his hospitality, before you get to the Killer Bee punch.

Sunshine keeps the Killer Bee recipe a secret, but it’s said to be smooth, without too much Grenadine or fruit punch but with a hint of tamarind. Whatever. Most people seem to have more than one.

Sunshine’s isn’t a fancy place. It’s a colorful wooden bar and restaurant, perfect for an afternoon or evening – or later – on the beach. It’s open for lunch, and it often closes at 2 a.m.

Not surprisingly, Sunshine’s serves fresh seafood. Grilled lobster in garlic butter is a favorite; so is fresh shrimp. The grilled ribs are also a specialty; they’re all cooked over a wood-and-charcoal grill to add flavor.
