Stephens Waring Designs 40-foot SUV

Stephens Waring, the classic yacht design firm in Belfast, Maine, just announced plans for Paradigm, a 40-foot sport utility vessel that they say is meant for modern living on the water.

The new  boat, appropriate for two couples or a family, features an almost plumb bow, a raised foredeck, and an open SUV-type platform aft for easy access to watersports or a dinghy.  It has a modified-V hull laid up with cored composite construction and laminate technology.

Standard power comes from a single 370-hp Yanmar diesel, with a fuel-efficient top speed of 20 knots. Twin diesels could boost that to 32 knots, or owners could opt for a hybrid diesel-electric power train that would give them silent running in a harbor or anchorage.

Stephens Waring has designed a variety of power and sail boats, recently including cruising boats for C. W. Hood and Lyman-Morse. The new Paradigm makes boating easy and comfortable, with a single-level deck all the way from the cockpit to the helm.

The open transom and full-width swim platform make for easy boarding, and the cockpit has facing settees on each side. Glass doors lead to the salon, where large windows provide excellent visibility all around. It has facing settees, a galley aft, a single helm seat to starboard and a matching seat to port.

Down two steps, the master cabin is in the bow with a guest cabin tucked under the helm deck on the port side. The head is to starboard.

Specs.: LOA: 40’3”; Beam: 13’1”; Draft: 3’6”; Disp.: 19,500 lbs.; Fuel: 250 gals.; Water: NA; Power: 1×370-hp Yanmar diesel. Read more:
