New 41-Knot, 65-foot Innovative Dutch Cruiser

The Van der Valk yard in The Netherlands is making a new 65-foot, 41-knot, luxury cruiser with an exceptional aluminum hull and the ability to navigate the shallow waters of the Bahamas and cut through rough water offshore.

With a low profile, an aft-set flybridge, a massive 111-square-foot aft deck when the terraces are deployed, post-modern European lines and an Art-Deco styled interior, the new EDGE 65 will turn heads on both sides of the Atlantic. And that’s before you get to its performance.

Van der Valk worked with Cor D. Rover, the Dutch superyacht designer, and Studio Delta Naval Architects for the hull, and they in turn worked with Petestep, an innovative Swedish firm that has developed what it calls a revolutionary hull technology. They did more than 50 hull simulations, each one taking at least half a day, and ended up adding three Petestep deflectors to the EDGE 65. The deflectors redirect spray water down and aft, giving the boat more lift and forward thrust. The result is less slamming in gnarly sea conditions and a more comfortable ride throughout the speed range.

With the four Verados, the EDGE 65 has a cruising speed of 28 knots, and it was designed for the owners’ desires to cruise in the Bahamas. The draft is just 3 feet.

The EDGE 65 is something of a family affair for the owners; Van der Valk built a 90-footer for their parents in 2019, and an 111-footer for their grandparents in 2021.

For the interior, Cor D. Rover says, “We’ve designed a kind of cabana on the water.” The fold-down balconies not only increase the social size of the aft deck, but they also allow room to launch the watersports gear that otherwise would be difficult with the four outboards aft. A crane on the flybridge enables the yacht to carry and launch a tender or jet ski up there.

Carla Guilhelm, the interior designer, said “The owners have no interest in a traditional lounge, preferring to entertain guests in a country kitchen galley arrangement with a bar. They know people spend very little time indoors when day-tripping around the Caribbean, and when they do venture inside, they will have an informal place to sip cocktails and gather around the island chatting.”

The EDGE 65 has a master stateroom with a queen-sized bed and in suite head and shower. Two other cabins share a head and shower.

The EDGE 65 is scheduled to be launched later this year; it will sport an Aston Martin Racing Green hull.
