A new boat from a new builder, the Makai 37 is building on the growing popularity of power catamarans in a popular size range.

The new Makai 37 is a two-stateroom, two-head cruiser with two 320-hp Yanmar diesels and surface-piercing props, delivering a top speed of 38 knots and a range of 750 nm. Twin 370-hp Yanmars are upgrades.

Makais are built in Split, Croatia, by a new company lead by people with 20 years of experience in the industry, primarily on the catamaran side. The boat as designed by the Italian designer Emanuele Rossi. On its website, Makai says its goal is “to be the world’s most desirable power catamaran brand.” It also makes a 45, with twin Volvo IPS400 pod drives and a range of 1,200 nm.

The 37 is built for a cruising couple or family, and the cabins below, one in each hull, are stylish and sizeable, with 6’ 10” standing headroom. Both can be ordered with a double bed, with the option of an extra single for kids or guests. Each has panoramic side windows with built-in portlights, and its own head with a separate shower.

The helm and aft deck are protected by a full-length hardtop. The aft deck features an open design. A sun lounge/sofa console is centered, and its back can be adjusted to face forward or aft, and there’s a teak table for outdoor dining. You can walk around on both sides.

Just forward, on the starboard side, a cruising galley with a stove, grill, fridge and sink is large enough to provide for a week’s cruise. More seating is to port. Two seats face the helm forward to starboard. You can walk up to the foredeck to find full-length sun lounges on the bow.

Makai’s Air Glide hull design cushions the ride and reduces slamming by drawing air between the  hulls. The cat has Kevlar added to the bows to make beaching it easy.
