Candela Building Foiling Electric Center Console

Candela just announced that it’s building a new 29-foot foiling boat that it says will be the first all-electric center console in the world.

The new C-8 CC uses the same high-tech platform as the Candela Daycruiser that was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last January. Candela says the Daycruiser is now the best-selling electric boat in the world, with more than 150 orders.

An innovative Swedish builder, Candela now wants to enter the center-console market, the largest segment in the U.S., with more than 50,000 boats sold last year. The C-8 CC has two seats at the console in the center of the boat and two rows of bench seats on either side of a table all the way aft. Two more seats are on the bow. It has a wet bar, swim platform, enclosed head, and a 15-inch touchscreen display

The boat is driven by a 100-hp C-POD electric motor using electricity stored in a 9-kWh lithium battery pack made by Polestar, the electric car company. It foils at 16 knots, and a computer adjusts the hydrofoils 100 times a second to provide a steady ride well above the waves and wake.

Top speed is 30 knots, and the C-8 CC has a range of 57 nm at its cruising speed of 22 knots. The battery can be recharged up to 80 percent in just 35 minutes, while the motor does not require any maintenance for 3,000 hours.

The new Candela has an 8’ 2” beam; it’s made from carbon fiber, and weighs just 3,700 pounds. The foils retract at the touch of a button so the boat can be beached for a picnic or put on a trailer to reach more destinations.

Candela says it costs less than $10 to recharge the battery, but that may be a bit irrelevant since the boat’s price starts at about $362,000.
