The Coast Guard rescued two people and their dog after their 28-foot power catamaran started to sink Monday near St Catherine’s Sound in southern Georgia.

The Coast Guard station in Charleston, South Carolina, heard a distress Mayday call on VHF Channel 16 from a man on board the cat, named Pisces, at 5:32 on Monday evening. The caller stated the boat’s name and its position. The Coast Guard called its air station in Savannah, which launched a Dolphin helicopter, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The helicopter arrived on the scene, and a rescue swimmer helped the two people into a rescue basket for a hoist. The swimmer also rescued their dog, Reggie, who was tied to the sinking boat on his leash. The helicopter carried the two people and Reggie to Hunter Army Airfield where they were reported “in good spirits.”

There was no further information about why the Pisces sank. But the Coast Guard said the boat’s PLB helped in the rescue.

“We were able to locate the survivors’ exact position because of an alert from their PLB,” said Tyler Murray, a Coast Guard flight mechanic. “A PLB transmits personalized distress signals and helps us find you in SAR missions. If you own a boat, the USCG highly recommends this equipment.” Read more:
