New Prestige 420S Low-Profile Cruiser

It’s easy to use, and to like, the new Prestige 420S cruiser, a low-profile coupe with stylish lines and  an open, flowing interior.

The 420S is the smallest in the upscale French builder’s S series that also has a 46S and a 520S. They’re all designed by the Garroni studios in Genoa; Garroni Design’s portfolio includes everything from sailboats and motoryachts to cruise liners.

The Prestige 420S is a two-cabin, two-head cruiser that would be at home in coastal waters around the U.S. as well as on the Great Lakes. Its air draft is only 14′ 9” so it can slide under most of the bridges on the Great Loop or in Florida.

Standard power comes from twin 380-hp Cummins diesels, producing a top speed of 32 knots and a range of 210 nm at a cruising speed of 23 knots. Twin 425-hp Cummins are upgrades. Either way, the 420S uses V-drives aft. The boat also has a joystick and variable-speed bow thruster to help with docking and low-speed maneuvering.

You can board the 420S from a large, teak swim platform (that lowers via hydraulics) and walk into the cockpit on the port side. You might want to stop on the platform to lift a hatch in the transom that reveals a grill for outdoor picnics. An L-shaped sofa and a teak table are in the cockpit, and large glass doors slide open to the salon.

The galley is aft there, and with the doors open, the salon and cockpit flow together, all on the same level. A U-shaped seating area is on the port side, with a dining table; a smaller sofa is opposite, just aft of the helm on the starboard side. Windows all around provide excellent visibility from the helm and everywhere else in the salon.

Below, the master stateroom is amidships with a centered, walkaround double bed and a private head and shower. The guest cabin is forward with a centered double berth, but an owner could choose twin berths instead. It shares the day head.

Prestige is part of the worldwide Beneteau group.
