Lyman-Morse Building New Monhegan 42 Cruiser

Lyman-Morse in Thomaston, Maine, just announced that it’s building a new Monhegan 42 Down East cruiser designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

The new 42 is the third in Lyman-Morse’s semi-custom Monhegan series, and it shows how an owner can customize an existing platform to suit his or her specific needs. The semi-custom approach delivers the attributes of a custom yacht, but with a considerably shorter lead time. It also builds on the success of a proven design.

The Monhegan 42 has Hunt’s iconic deep-V hull, with power from twin 550-hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels. Its cruising speed is 28 knots; top speed is 32 knots.

This latest Monhegan has a galley-down arrangement, with a dinette/lounge and then the owner’s stateroom in the bow with a head and shower. The owner wanted to be able to lie down and relax on the settee, so Lyman-Morse created a footwell in the layout.

The helm was built to the owner’s specs, including oversized 17-inch display screens as well as bow and stern thrusters to help with docking. The interior joinery on the new boat is South African mahogany, with teak and wenge accents.

The owner is a veteran boat owner, but this is his first semi-custom build. He says he chose the Lyman-Morse/Hunt collaboration because of their boats’ performance, safety and seaworthiness.

Hunt has designed the Monhegan 42 in four configurations: Flybridge, Cruiser, Extended Hardtop Cruiser, and Open. They are all available with water jet or traditional drives.

Several years ago, I was on the first 42 in the Monhegan series, a flybridge boat, with Drew Lyman, the president of Lyman-Morse. We cruised down to Port Clyde and back, and I was impressed not only by the boat’s classic lines, but also by its overall handling and performance. It was a treat.

Specs.: LOA: 42’; Beam: 13’; Draft: 3’; Disp.: 26,500 lbs.; Fuel: 450 gals.; Water: 60 gals.; Power; 2×550-hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels.
