Nordhavn Launching New 71

Nordhavn just finished its first new 71, the company’s largest long-distance cruiser built for an owner-operator, and it’s scheduled to splash at its factory in Taiwan next week. (The 71 actually was set to splash this week, but a typhoon got in the way.)

After that, the 71 will head for its new owners, a couple in Seattle who are fairly familiar with the brand. Indeed, they have already owned three Nordhavns in the past 20 years – a 50, 57, 68. They plan to cruise their new 71, named Luna, in the Pacific Northwest and up to Alaska.

Nordhavn owners are loyal to the brand, and celebrate its history. Dan Streech, the company’s president, wrote me that it’s been 34 years since Nordhavn introduced its first boat, a 46. Since then, the company has built more than 600 boats from 35 to 120 feet. He said “this lifetime of experience and over 7 million miles of ocean travel” all result in the design of the new 71.

Streech said the 71 “incorporates a subtle elegance of styling evolution based on her longer waterline and plumb bow. Beneath her skin, the N71 is packed with the technology that is available in 2023, along with features based on experience and owner feedback. The hull form of the N71 includes a bulbous bow and has been optimized with Nordhavn’s in-house Computational Fluid Dynamics program.”

With its waterline of 68 feet, a 22’ 5” beam, 227,800 pound displacement and 4,830 gallons of fuel, “the 71 is a large boat, but still of a size that can be easily handled,” Streech said.

The company expects the 71 to be in production for the next 20 years, with a production run of abut 50 boats. Streech said he expects “to see the N71 as one of the most venerable and beloved Nordhavns ever.”

The 71 is one of a new breed of Nordhavns offered without a flybridge. It is a brand-new hull, aimed at owners who want to manage the boat themselves. The first three hulls have been ordered by owners of a Nordhavn 60 or 68.

The new 71 is available in two layouts: a three-stateroom layout with a skylounge, or a layout that incorporates a fourth stateroom in place of the skylounge. Either way, the 71 will maintain Nordhavn’s ocean-crossing tradition, set by a Nordhavn 40 that cruised around the world in 2001 and 2002.

The heart of the 71, the pilothouse, has a cherry dinette table with chart drawers underneath, book shelves and two Stidd helm chairs outfitted with Ultraleather. The dining table in the salon seats eight.
