Eastern 27: User-Friendly Pocket Cruiser

The outboard-powered Eastern 27 Islander a user-friendly, no-frills, Down-East styled pocket cruiser.

It’s also the top of Eastern’s fleet of 10 models from 20- to 27-feet. Easterns have been made in Milton, New Hampshire, since 1981.The company now also makes Rosborough Boats and Seaway Boats.

The Eastern 27 Islander is designed as a couple’s cruiser, with a V-berth below plus an extra berth (or storage area) tucked under the helm deck. The V-berth can be converted to a settee with a table. There are also shelves, a hanging locker, and an enclosed head with shower.

The helm deck can be enclosed with a dropdown curtain aft. Visibility is excellent from the single helm seat on the starboard side. The windows on each side slide open for more ventilation. The two front windows also open. There’s a two-person companion seat on the port side with a lounge seat aft. The galley is aft of the helm seat.

The cockpit has a transom bench seat and an aft-facing seat forward on the port side.  A Bimini top is optional.

Trim tabs are standard; a bow thruster is optional. Maintenance is minimal.

The Eastern 27 has a flared, raised bow and a hard-chine hull with a 12-degree deadrise at the transom for a smooth ride and stability underway and at anchor.

For power, the company recommends twin outboards from 150- to 200-hp, although you also can order a single outboard in the 250- to 300-hp range. With twin 200-hp Suzukis, the Eastern 27 tops out at about 36 knots, with a range of more than 300 nm at 18 knots.
