Adrienne Vaughan, a prominent American book publisher, was killed in a boating accident off the Amalfi coast in Italy when the chartered 29-foot power boat she and her family were riding on hit a 130-foot sailboat that was not moving.

Vaughan, 45, had been sun bathing on the bow of the power boat at the time. She was thrown overboard in the collision and then was hit by the boat’s propellers. Her husband, Mike White, was also injured. Their two sons were not hurt.

Passengers on the sailboat, who were celebrating a wedding, said two doctors on board jumped into the water to try to save Vaughan. A nearby boat raced her to shore, but she died before emergency workers could arrive. Her husband was hospitalized.

Vaughan was the president of Bloomsbury, USA, the publisher of Harry Potter books, among many others.

Witnesses said that the powerboat seemed to be passing the sailboat, when it suddenly turned and ran into it. The captain of the power boat suffered pelvic and rib injuries. Italian authorities tested him for drug and alcohol after the accident. Local news outlets said that cocaine was found in his blood.
