Latest CLB72 Makes Newport Debut

CL Yachts is showing its latest CLB72 cruiser at the Newport Show. With twin 1,000-hp Volvo IPS1350 pod drives, the four-stateroom, three-head yacht tops out at 31 knots, a more-than-respectable speed for a luxury motoryacht.

The CLB72 has smooth lines and a sophisticated interior; the idea is to convey simple elegance. There are many social areas inside and out, ranging from al fresco dining on the aft deck to relaxing on lounges on the foredeck. CL says the flybridge on the 72 is one of the largest in its class; it houses the upper helm, lots of seating and a fridge and ice-maker, all protected by a hardtop.

The 72 is one of CL’s most successful yachts. A spinoff of the historic Cheoy Lee Shipyards, CL Yachts introduced its first boats, the 72 and a 76, at the Miami show in 2019. The boat in Newport is hull #49, and its upgrades include sliding windows in the galley, electric windows in the salon, and opening portlights on the accommodations deck to bring in more light and fresh air.

Designed by Howard Apollonio, the CLB72 is a solid, fuel-efficient performer with a resin-infused, composite hull. Carbon fiber keeps the hull strong but lightweight.  Volvo’s joystick controls make low-speed maneuvering sure and easy; a pantograph door next to the helm opens to the starboard side deck.

Below, the master stateroom is full-beam amidships, with a vanity/desk walk-in closet, and a luxurious head with two sinks. The VIP stateroom is forward, also with an en suite head, while the port and starboard guest cabins share a head. There’s also a two-berth crew cabin and head aft, while the swim platform there is large enough to serve as a beach club of sorts with chairs and water sports equipment.
