Long-Range Electric R30 Launching Soon

The Blue Innovations Group, founded by a former Tesla top executive, just announced that it will launch its innovative R30 electric boat in December.

The R30 is 30 feet long with a 10-foot beam, making it one of the largest all-electric boats on the market. It’s powered by a “dual motor powertrain” producing 400-hp each, and it uses Lithium ion Phosphate batteries instead of the more standard Lithium ion in a 221-kWh battery pack for 600 kW of power. The batteries are stored in banks that are built into the framework of the boat.

The new boat is projected to have an impressive range of eight hours of running time, or 100 nm. Cruising speed is 17 mph; top speed is 45 mph. It can recharge up to 80 percent in 45 minutes using a BIG Fast Charger, or up to 80 percent overnight using standard shore power at a marina.

The boat was created by Chuan (“John”) Vo, the former head of global engineering at Tesla. A refugee from Vietnam as a child, Vo also has worked in the semiconductor, aerospace and solar industries. He founded Blue Innovations Group in Pinellas Park, across the bay from Tampa, two years ago. He said the R30 “is a testament to American innovation and cutting-edge technologies emerging from the state of Florida.”

The R30’s hull is built from aluminum alloy; it weighs about 10,000 pounds. In keeping with the current fashion, it has rear “terraces” that fold out of the aft sides to provide more space and water access. The boat can hold 12 people, and a cabin below has accommodations for a couple for overnighting. There’s a kitchenette with a sink, fridge and cooktop, and a head with a bidet.

For solar power, the R30 has a canopy producing 2.8 kW that also provides shade over the bow and the terrace lounge.

The first boats will be delivered next summer. You can reserve one of the first 100 by paying $5,000 for a BIG Reservation. A $1,000 Blue Reservation means you can order a boat from hull 101 on.
