Azimut Grande 36M: High-Style Winner

The Azimut Grande 36M was introduced to the United States market at the recent Fort Lauderdale show, and it wasted no time in making itself known. Indeed, the sleek 116-foot super yacht was named Best of the Show by a panel of independent judges.

For the award, Azimut faced some heavy competition, including the Benetti 4M Oasis, Princess Y95, wallywhy150, and Sunreef 80 Eco, among others. But the Azimut stood out for both its innovative design and its creative hull shape, a coupling that was hard to beat.

The new Azimut was launched in Viareggio last August, and it caused a stir then. The exterior was by Alberto Mancini; the interior by Achille Salvagni. What caused the most attention was the innovative semi-walkaround upper deck skylounge that runs from stern to the bow. The huge side windows retract completely so guests inside are treated to a view that seems to go on forever. The skylounge also joins with an aft terrace to create a massive indoor/outdoor space overlooking the sea.

The skylounge is large enough so it can be customized. The standard design wraps forward to include a whirlpool tub made of glass and a sunbathing area that Azimut says  is “equipped with every comfort.” The skylounge can be set up with a cinema layout, or even as the main indoor dining area on the yacht. In that case, the forward space on the main deck that usually houses the dining area can be converted into a secluded spot that Azimut calls “The Gentleman’s Club.”

The salon on the main deck is also large enough so it too can be customized. It can have two lounges, for example, one after the other, or a more traditional layout with the seating and entertaining area aft and the galley (or the men’s hangout) forward.

The Grande 36M has Azimut’s D2P (Displacement-to-Planing) hull that’s efficient throughout the speed range. The yacht’s superstructure uses a lot of carbon fiber to keep the weight down. The combination of hull shape and light weight produces a full-efficient hull and reduces the yacht’s carbon footprint. Azimut says the Grande 36M produces 30 percent less carbon emissions compared to yachts of the same size with traditional hard-chine hulls.

Standard power comes from twin 2,200 MTU diesels, with 2,400-hp MTUs as upgrades. Top speed is 24 knots.
