Longreach Catamarans just launched its new 58-foot Expedition power catamaran and is holding sea trials in Thailand.
A variation on the Australian company’s standard 58, the new Expedition has a fully enclosed flybridge as well as a customized fully enclosed cockpit that can be opened up with electric windows. Powered by twin 440-hp Yanmars, the Expedition has a range of 2,000 nm. Optional fuel tanks with a 2,560-gallon capacity extend the range to 3,500 nm at a cruising speed of 11.5 knots. Top speed: 25 knots.
Solar panels on the flybridge hardtop produce 5 kW to power the cat’s 24 kW lithium battery bank; that’s enough to run the house systems, including 92,000 BTU of air conditioning.
The unique cockpit provides all-weather protection, and has an electric grill, a bar, an L-shaped lounge for relaxing or dining, and an aft door that slides open to access the dinghy platform.
The salon is a vast dining and relaxing area. The galley is forward and home-like, with Corian countertops, a steam oven, standup fridge, and lots of storage space. Internal stairs lead up to the flybridge, with two captain’s chairs facing the helm and steps leading down to the foredeck.
Aft of the helm, a large social area has a pop-up TV, lounge, wet bar, lounge seating and access to the aft boat deck with a Davco crane for tenders.
Below, the master cabin is outsized, with a king bed, office and lots of storage. There’s a vanity in the en suite head, and a separate rain-shower unit. Another cabin is aft, all on the port side, with a queen-sized bed and an en suite head. A third cabin is in the starboard hull, and a utility room is aft with a washer and dryer.
The Expedition has a reverse bow on both hulls to extend the waterline and produce a wave-piercing effect for a smooth ride. Two docking keels under the waterline protect the running gear if you want to beach the boat for a picnic or repairs.
