Superyacht Crashes into Dry Dock

Sooner or later, we all have a misunderstanding with a dock; a sudden shift in the wind, a misjudgment of current, or simply a day when things don’t go well, and the boat and the dock have a meeting sooner that we’d planned. But a recent incident at the Lürssen yard in Germany put that sort of thing on an entirely new level.

Indeed, a 446-foot yacht, one of the largest in the world under construction, ran into the steel door at the Lürssen dry dock in Bremen from the inside, damaging the door and then wiping out part of a steel bridge on the outside, leaving it partially submerged. Local media said the bow of the $450 million yacht, known as Project Alibaba, had some damage.

Reports said the door didn’t open on time, but Lürssen did not provide any details. One worker was injured. But the accident resulted in calls for damage control, with Bremen police and firefighters responding; a helicopter arrived to help.

Lürssen says the Bremen yard “is where the most ambitious and creative concepts for bespoke luxury megayachts and gigayachts become a reality.” It did not say what caused the accident or estimate the amount of the damage.

It did issue a statement, saying “Immediately after the incident, the shipyard initiated all necessary evacuation measures and informed the relevant authorities. The accident scene was secured together with the police and the Bremen fire brigade. One employee was slightly injured during the incident and was immediately treated by the emergency services.”
