Candela Launches New Polestar Foiler

Candela, the Swedish electric boat builder, just teamed up with Polestar, the Swedish electric car builder, to create a new Candela Polestar Edition foiling sportboat using Polestar’s hefty electric powerpack.

The 28’ 3” Candela C-8 Polestar Edition uses the same 69 kWh battery pack that’s in the Polestar 2 electric performance fastback car, which offers DC charging, so the foiling boat now has additional range and a fast charging time.

The boat’s range is 57 nm at a cruising speed of 22 knots, and the ride is comfortable, since the boat flies above the waves on its foils, cruising without any pounding or any noise from a gas or diesel engine. The charging time on AC is 6.5 hours to 100 percent, while on DC it’s 35 minutes for 10 to 80 percent.

Candela, a Stockholm company, has been a leader in electric foiling boats, built for recreational use and commuting. Sweden has more islands than any other country on the planet (including 1,000 that are inhabited), so commuting by boat is a major market.

Polestar made its first car in 2020; it had tuned Volvos for high performance previously. It also is opening an SUV plant in South Carolina.

The new collaboration brings Polestar colors and materials to the Candela foiler. There’s a new solid light grey color for the hull, and the seats on the boat replicate those in the car. The C-8’s hydrofoils are finished in Swedish gold, just as Polestar uses gold to highlight performance elements of its cars, such as the gold brake calipers.

The Candela C-8 Polestar edition is made with carbon fiber and weighs just 3,858 pounds. It’s price starts at about $450,000.
