Cockwells Launches Hardy 50 Explorer

Cockwells has just launched its new Hardy 50DS blue-water cruiser, designed to take on the waters of the world. Powered by twin 725-hp Volvo diesels with straight shafts, the Hardy 50 can hit a top speed of 29 knots, but if you dial back to 8 knots the range is more than 1,500 nm.

Cockwells, in Falmouth, England, bought the Hardy line in 2020 and launched a 65 two years ago as its motoryacht flagship. The new 50DS is designed as the little sister of the 65, with all the robust oceangoing capabilities, but in a smaller package, making it easier to handle for a couple or small family. The 50 has three cabins below, sleeping six, with two heads.

Cockwells worked with Andrew Wolstenholme, the British designer, on the 50, ending up with a layout that is open and comfortable for long cruises. The basic design is fairly classic (a flybridge is optional); the Hardy 50 has all the looks of a serious cruiser. It carries a Category A rating for offshore cruising.

The salon has a large U-shaped settee on the port side with a dining table designed for six. A step up leads to the pilothouse, where the  helm is on a raised platform with two helm seats. In keeping with its British heritage, the windshields are heated. Doors open to the walk-around side decks.  A hydraulic bow thruster helps with docking.

Folding glass doors at the aft end of the salon lead to a large cockpit, with built-in bench seating aft and a table for outdoor dining. A centered door opens to the full-beam swim platform; it’s large enough to hold a 12’ 4” RIB. The lazarette is large enough to hold a variety of water toys.

Below, the owner’s stateroom with a queen bed is forward. The en suite head and shower are in separate compartments. The two guest cabins share a head.

Specs.: LOA: 51’10”; Beam: 15’9”; Draft: 4’5”; Disp.: 51,400 lbs.; Fuel: 796 gals.; Water: 194 gals.; Power: 2×725 Volvo diesels.
