North-Line 42: Sturdy Dutch Cruiser

The Dutch-built North-Line 42 Wheelhouse is a traditional-looking, blue-water cruising boat, a no-nonsense affair built to tackle the boisterous waters of the North Sea and come back home safely.

There’s nothing fancy here; the bulwarks don’t fold out for a floating beach club, the boat won’t drive or park itself. But, powered by twin 480-hp Cummins dieses, it will hit  a top speed of about 30 knots; dial back to a displacement speed of 8 knots and it will have a range of 840 nm. The North-Line 42 has a Class A Ocean-Going certificate.

Built for a cruising family, the North-Line 42 has the master cabin in the bow, with a V-berth and filler, and a second cabin aft, with one single berth and one double berth Both cabins have their own heads and showers. The cruising galley is below, at the foot of the stairs, with a U-shaped settee and teak table on the port side, and all the cooking and storage facilities to starboard.

The salon is straightforward, and will look familiar to anyone who’s set foot on a trawler. The single helm seat, with a teak destroyer wheel, is to port. A large chart table is across to starboard. A settee and teak table are aft. Two wooden doors open to the cockpit, with seating and a table aft. For safety, the North-Line has high railings along the teak side decks leading forward.

North-Line traces its roots to 1976, but it started making recreational boats under its own name in 2007; the yard is now in Harlingen, north of Amsterdam. Today, North-Line makes cruising boats from 34 to 60 feet.
