New Omikron OT-60: Comfort, Not Speed

Omikron, a Greek yard, will unveil its new OT-60 at the big Düsseldorf show, starting Jan. 20. The company says the 60, its first production boat, is “a motoryacht that feels like a sailboat,” offering “the perfect combination of the quiet, easygoing lifestyle of sailing and the convenience and space of a power  yacht.”

Standard power comes from twin 250-hp Yanmar diesels, producing a top speed of 16 knots, a quiet cruising speed of 12 knots, and a range of more than 1,000 nm at 8 knots. Omikron says the OT-60 is not designed for speed, but for comfortable cruising in the Greek islands or anywhere else in the world, and its minimal draft of just 2’ 10” means it can navigate shallow waters without a worry.

The basic boat is three cabins and three heads, although the master cabin forward can be replaced by two separate cabins there if the owner has a large family (or is interested in the charter market).

The emphasis on the OT-60 is on outdoor space, particularly on the open aft deck, which has two large lounges on the sides facing each other. A glass door and large glass bulwarks separate the aft deck from the salon, with full-height windows all around. The ambiance is open, light and fresh, with a sofa to port and cabinets and the helm station to starboard.

The galley and dinette are half-way down to the lower accommodations deck, and they’re infused with light from the large windshield above.

Wide side decks lead to an island sun bed on the foredeck. You can climb up a ladder on the port side of the foredeck to reach another sun bed on  the cabin top.

Omikron is the new brand of Olympic Marine’s yard on the Aegean, which made more than 2,000 sailboats from 1969 to the turn of the century.
