Seattle Yachts just announced that it’s now building the first downeast-styled 38-foot Legacy 12 cruiser in its plant in Anacortes, Washington. The boat, the first in the Mark 11 series from Tartan Legacy Yachts, will be launched later this year.

The new Legacy will have one or two staterooms, a single head and a galley-up layout. Standard power is twin 300-hp Yamaha or Mercury outboards, producing a top speed of 35 knots. Optional twin 400-hp outboards move the top speed up to 45 knots. Twin 300-hp diesel outboards are another option.

The new Legacy has a rich and cross-country history. Legacy Yachts, proud downeast cruisers, were produced in Middletown, Rhode Island, from 1995 until the recession in 2008. Legacy was started by Freedom Yachts as the markets were shifting; the first Legacy, a 40, was designed by Mark Ellis. Tartan, the sailboat manufacturer, bought the company in 2017 and moved the manufacturing to its plant in Fairport, Ohio.

Seattle Yachts bought Tartan Legacy Yachts in April, 2020. Seattle Yachts’ Marine Manufacturing Group is now building the new Legacy in the same plant where it’s building 57- to 85-foot Northern Marine offshore cruisers.

A couple’s cruiser, the new Legacy 12 is built for everything from weekends on board to a trip around the Great Loop. When the company was still at Tartan, JC Espinosa, the superyacht designer, updated Legacy’s traditional lines, even creating hull extensions aft that hide the outboards when viewed from the side. Legacy also extended the running surface to provide buoyancy for the outboards.

Below, the owner’s cabin has a queen-sized berth and a large lounging or reading area on the port side; that area can be replaced with a guest cabin with two berths. The head with a shower stall is to starboard.

A full galley is up on the main deck behind the helm seat on the starboard side. It includes a ceramic induction cooktop and a Corian or quartz countertop. The cockpit has an optional outdoor galley with a barbeque, fridge, ice-maker and sink. A settee and table are aft. A sun pad is on the bow. The Legacy has high side rails for safety, and Flexiteek synthetic decks for easy maintenance.
