A 10-year-old boy from Maryland was bitten by a shark at a resort on Paradise Island, the Bahamas, on Monday afternoon.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force issued a news release saying “the boy was bitten on the right leg while participating in an expedition in a shark tank at a local resort.”

The boy was taken to Doctors Hospital in Nassau in serious but stable condition and was recovering from surgery. He was to be airlifted back to Maryland.

The attack occurred at Atlantis Paradise Island Blue Adventures. Stuart Cove’s, the organization that runs the shark diving program, said it was “deeply saddened” that “a child suffered a shark bite in their in-water experience.” It closed the program. Stuart Cove’s said an instructor and guide were in the water when the attack occurred and provided immediate medical help.

Tori Massi, who was in the tank at the time, told NBC News that the dive was peaceful at first, but “once the little boy came down, it just kind of took a dark turn. We saw the sharks hone in on him and then just a pool of blood afterwards.”

A guest at the resort told Eyewitness News Bahamas that she saw the boy’s father carrying him away with a towel wrapped around his leg “tourniquet-style” while his mother was “running and screaming.”

“Investigations are ongoing into the incident,” the Bahamas police said.
