The new Fjord 39XP, with the German company’s aggressively styled minimalist lines, will make its world debut at the Palm Beach boat show, starting March 21. Andrea Zabonini, the product director of HanseYachts AG, Fjord’s parent company, said the new 39 “embodies our commitment to innovation and luxury.”

Designed by Patrick Benfield, the British naval architect, the new 39 offers a mix of head-turning looks, performance, and understated luxury. It has joystick control for easy low-speed maneuvering and docking, while two 400-hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards  provide the power. The new 39XP cruises at an easy 25 knots, and tops out at a respectable 45 knots.

Fjord’s fleet now goes from 38 to 53 feet, and all the boats have the same looks, meaning in Fjord’s case that less is more. The lines are almost supernaturally clean and elegant, suggesting power and European high-style at the same time. The 39 also comes in a sterndrive model, aimed at the European market; Americans prefer outboards.

The 39XP has wide, open teak decks all around – on both sides, forward and aft. The transom is open. Two tables aft, seating eight people, can be lowered to form a large sun pad in the cockpit. There’s another sun pad on the foredeck.

Two seats face the helm on the starboard side. Owners can choose among several windshield designs. A small galley and bar are options for the main deck. Below, a two-person berth is in the bow for overnights, with a full head and shower.

Fjord is a proud brand, founded in 1960 by three Norwegians just as boat building was embracing fiberglass. They built open weekenders, cabin cruisers and flybridge yachts for many years that were popular throughout Europe. In 2007, HanseYachts AG bought the company and introduced the Fjord 40 that instantly made waves among buyers around the world for its spectacular simple design that has served as an inspiration for other builders ever since.
