Karnic S37X: Room for Everyone

You’re probably not going to buy the new Karnic S37X cruiser, or even see one at a boat show in the United States. But it’s interesting because of everything it manages to pack inside, including three separate double cabins below.

Karnic Boats has been making vessels on Cyprus for the past 30 years. It’s a well-regarded builder, popular in Europe, and the new 37 is the flagship of its fleet.

Powered by twin 300-hp Mercury outboards, the Karnic S37X has a top speed of 41 knots, according to the builder. It carries just 211 gallons of fuel, so you’re not going to enjoy a long cruise on it, but that’s not the point.

The new Karnic is made for family cruising, island hopping or having a weekend away. The accommodations include the master cabin in the bow, and then two other cabins a bit aft, under the accommodations deck, one on the starboard, one to port. They all  have beds that are large enough to sleep two adults.

If you need more sleeping space, the dinette in the salon transforms in to a double bed, meaning the boat can sleep a total of eight people. One drawback to having a large crowd on board: There’s only one head.

The boat manages to pack in some other tricks that maximize the use of space. The rear bench seat in the cockpit folds up and out to become a large sun pad. And if  you push a button, the transom slides back and forth, so you can choose whether you want more space on the swim platform to use the aft-facing bar and grill, or more in the cockpit with two folding side seats that drop down from the side coamings to join the outdoor dining table.

Glass doors lead from the cockpit to the salon and you can open them on each side so the rear bench seat of the interior dinette can be reconfigured to face aft, joining the social space in the cockpit. On the foredeck, two large sun lounges provide another social area and they can be covered by a built-in Bimini that provides some shade.

The Karnic has a utilitarian fit and finish, and the salon doesn’t have a lot of moving around space. But it certainly holds, and sleeps, a crowd.
