One of the boats that caught my eye while at the Cannes Boat Show was the Greek-built Omikron 60 power cruiser. The boat was designed by Juan Koyoumdjian who is best known for his stylish and fast cruising and racing sailboats. The builder’s brief to the designer was for a family cruiser that offers the quiet and peace of a sailboat with the luxury and conveniences of a powerboat.
The Omikron 60 is the result and it’s traditional deck house and strong sheer line have echoes of Eastern Mediterranean boats from the 1950s. Missing is the acre of varnished mahogany, but the shapes are true to their historical roots.
The cockpit is wide open and has two L-shaped dinettes. Down five steps aft, the twin stairs lead to a large aft deck that is more than a swim platform, it is a place for living right next to the water. Picture chaise lounges and side tables for cool drinks.
There is another lounging area on the fore deck which will be a good place for the younger crowd to gather on their own apart from the oldies on the after deck.
The salon has a large sofa and a side table plus the twin seats at the helm. With huge windows, you have a full 360-degree view of the seascapes around you and great visibility for the helmsman.
The galley and dinette are down three steps forward and feel more like a sailboat’s arrangement than a powerboat-style kitchen. The dinette will seat four and has a great view outside via the hull port.
The fit and finish of the Omikron 60 is highly refined with matching grains on the wood cabinet doors and soft fabrics covering the bulkheads.
The builder likes “slow cruising” and spending time enjoying the journey as one does on a sailboat. That said, the 60 can cruise at 16 knots so you can get home quickly if need be. Plus, it has a range under power of a thousand miles.
A handsome boat with a lot of fine qualities, the Omikron 60 had me looking back for one last glimpse as I walked away down the dock. Read more here.
