This week Sabre Yachts announced that the Maine builder was reintroducing their ever-popular 38 Salon Express with twin Volvo DPI drives. The upgrade from straight shafts came about following close conversations with existing owners and prospective customers.
Given the 38’s proven hull design and seakeeping qualities, the move to DPI drives has several distinct advantages that will enhance the boat’s cruising capabilities.
The drives provide variable depth control so adventurous skippers can navigate in the thin waters of the ICW, the Bahamas or Florida Keys. With the system’s DuoProps or dual rotating props, power Is delivered in the most efficient way while acceleration is improved. Plus, the variable depth control enhances trim for the softest ride possible.
The DPI system comes with Volvo’s Joy Stick controls which greatly enhance maneuverability in close quarter, particularly when mooring and unmooring. This in turn builds confidence and ultimately enjoyment on the water for the skipper and the whole crew.
Sabre’s CEO and President Aaron Crawford said, “We aim to deliver exceptional performance and improved cruising capability while representing a long-term investment in quality and reliability, and we’re supported by more than 20 years of trusted partnership with Volvo Penta.”
The 38’s reconfigured engine room and DPI drives has the added benefit of opening up space inside the hull for a dedicated Seakeeper location, access to a utility space and room to provide a sliding door linking the cockpit to the salon.
The newly powered 38 Salon Express promises to be the right boat at the right time for many owners who enjoy Sabre’s Downeast style, comfortable accommodations and excellent performance.
