Costa Rica is a favorite winter destination for adventurous Americans, but it has not been known as a yachting destination. Instead, most of the cruising boats that visit the Central American country make the run either north or south to or from the Panama Canal.
But that is changing slong the country’s Pacific Coast. In the north, marinas have been built and the word has got out that not only is Costa Rica and splendid eco-travel destination is it also a fun coast to cruise with marine facilities that cruisers need.
While the north is built up and full of tourists, the south of the country around the Bay of Gofito is much less so and offers some of the wildest and pristine natural environments in all of Costa Rica.
In the Bay of Golfito, the marina conglomerate IGY has built a new marina with slip space for dozens of yachts, an upscale hotel and a restaurant. For those wanting to see Costa Rica in its natural state, this is the place to moor your boat.
Nearby it the Golfito Peninsula with two large national parks, both unspoiled natural rain forests, that are filled with wildlife from exotic birds to monkeys and much more. The diving and snorkeling in the gulf is the best in the country and right offshore is some of the best sport fishing grounds anywhere.
The gulf is also a breeding ground for humpback whales and home to a variety of sharks and exotic sea life.
The only hitch is that Golfito is a long drive over unpaved roads from the Capital and airport in San Jose, so changing crew or making a return trip home can be an adventure. But, when you get to know this wonderful region of Costa Rica, it is worth the trouble.
