The team behind the Slovenian boat builder Greenline made a commitment from the company’s inception. In 2008 to build boats that are as eco-friendly as possible. They pioneered solar charging and battery systems and worked with vendors to create electric propulsion systems, including proprietary management software.

The concept was an immediate hit and propelled Greenline to rapid growth not only in Europe where eco-friendliness is a passion, but around the world. The U.S. became their largest market and Yacht Sales International in Ft. Lauderdale one of their biggest dealers.

YSI announced this week that they will have the all-new Greenline 42 at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show at the end of October for its North American debut. The 42 takes Greenline back to their roots by creating a pure couple’s cruising boat that embraces all that the builder has learned over the years.

The 42’s lines are full of Greenline DNA. The sheer rises slightly as it flows forward and has a classic touch of reverse curve at the foredeck. The cabin top is flat and sits neatly above the hull. This is the solar farm that drives the boat.

Aft, the cockpit is large and can either be left open for folding chairs or can be fitted with a dinette or lounge that will seat four for alfresco meals. The swim platform is large enough for sunning or for launching water sports or a SCUBA expedition.

The foredeck has a large sunbed or lounge and will be a good place for the younger generation to gather while oldies enjoy the cockpit and salon.

The salon has the galley aft where it is conveniently between the cockpit and the four-person dinette. There is a long counter along the starboard side for extra galley working area or to mount a TV. The helm is on the starboard side and has a door right next to it for access to the side deck. This makes docking and mooring easier for a solo operator or a couple.

The 42 is a one cabin one head boat so it is indeed a couple’s retreat. The suite is spacious and, like the salon, full of natural light.

Greenline offers a range of propulsion options. You can go with all electric, diesel-electric hybrid or all diesel drives. The most popular to date has been the hybrid system which they call the HDrive. In the 42 that is comprised of twin Yanmar 250-horposwer engines coupled with Greenline’s electric motors.

The hybrid motors run either or diesel or on eclectic power from the lithium battery bank. You can run at 25 knots on diesel only or you can scale back and run one engine on diesel and one on electricity. And, once in the harbor or marina you can switch to all-electric mode.

One of the side benefits to the robust solar-electric system is the ability to run the boat’s hotel functions for up to two days at anchor without having to recharge the batteries.

The new 42 is Greenline in its latest and most innovative mode and will be a star at this month’s Ft. Lauderdale show.
