Rayglass Boats just announced they’ve built a Protector 410 Targa with twin 600-hp Mercury Verado outboards, the largest outboards ever mounted on a RIB (and Mercury’s most powerful production engine).
Rayglass, a New Zealand builder, said they had to customize and strengthen the transom to handle the weight and torque of the massive V12, 7.6 liter displacement outboards. A new 600-hp Verado weighs 1,260 pounds.
In an announcement, the company said, “The result is one of the world’s most capable all-water vessels, combining the unmatched power of the Verado V12 engines with the Protector’s world-leading capability for safety and handling.”
Mercury’s new Verados are the first outboards to have a two-speed transmission, providing both efficiency at low-engine power and a fast response at high speeds. They also have double contra-rotating props for maximum grip in the water, and the first gearcase that turns independently of the outboard engine for fast response in turning and boat handling.
Chris Drees, the president of Mercury Marine, said the new Verado “is a remarkable engine that will change the future of boating.”
For his part, Dave Larsen, the CEO of Rayglass, said, “We wanted to build a boat that could outperform everything on the water. This is the result.” Larsen, who has driven the boat, said “it has the acceleration and speed of a supercar,” adding that “cruising in this is the most fun you can have on the water.”
The new Verado-equipped 410 Targa has three screens in the cockpit for digital switching, digital throttle technology and joystick maneuvering. It also has a recessed barbeque. Read more:
