New Protector Targa 380 with 1,800-hp Outboards

Protector just launched  the latest version of its popular Targa 380, offering a bit more room and considerably more power to the tough-as-nails recreational RIB.

The New Zealand builder says that the new Protector is the ultimate high-performance RIB, designed for “tough luxury” in any sea conditions. The performance certainly will be enhanced by the new Targa’s power capability; it can be driven by two or three outboards, up to a total of 1,800-hp. Many new owners certainly will opt for three 600-hp V12 outboards, boosting the top speed to more than 50 knots.

Over the years, Protectors have become popular around the world, serving as tenders on America’s Cup race courses and as adventure boats for serious recreational boaters. The New Zealand Coast Guard has Protector work boats at all 68 of its stations.

The new Targa 380 is solidly built from its transom to its wheelhouse bulkheads. It has two seats forward on the helm deck, which is surrounded by watertight hardened glass windows; visibility is excellent all around. A sun roof opens to let in more light and fresh air, and the side windows slide open as well.

Below, a comfortable 6-foot-long bench seat lines each side of the interior. It has standing headroom, with an enclosed head far forward. A fridge and wet bar are options. Other options include Stidd shock-mitigating helm chairs and a bow thruster.

Protector’s Targa lineup now includes a 310, 330, the 380, and 410. Protector first launched the 380 in 2020. The latest version has a new hull with an 18-degree deadrise at the transom so it can cut through rough water offshore.
