If you missed the Italian-made 43-foot Evo R4 WA at the recent Palm Beach show, you can still catch it as the Venice show that starts at the city’s historic Arsenal on May 29. But wherever you find it, the uber-modern Evo, devoid of things like stand-up cleats and railings that might interrupt its clean lines, is bound to turn a lot of heads.
And that’s before you push a button and deploy the bulwarks from both sides aft, or push another one and the transformer-type stern opens up and unfolds a terrace down to water level. The concept of a beach club has been used a lot lately, but in the Evo R4 WA, it is more than appropriate. And if you can’t catch enough sun aft, there’s always the large sun pad on the foredeck.
Made in Naples, the R4 WA (walkaround) is one of Evo’s most successful models. With its sleek silhouette, steel T-Top and carbon air inlets in both sides of the hull, it has design elements that were influenced Italian luxury cars. It also performs well, with a 38-knot top speed coming from twin 435-hp Volvo IPS pod drives. The new Evo has an 18-degree deadrise at the transom for offshore performance.
All told, the Evo R4 can hold 12 people, and most of them can gather aft. The hydraulic XTension bulwarks fold down to add 40 percent more space to the open aft deck, so you can use it as a big sun lounge. Push another button, and the Transformer platform opens out of the aft deck and extends down three steps with a large terrace. You can use the terrace for more sun bathing or access to the water. It also rotates 270-degrees to help with boarding.
The T-Top and an awning provide protection over the helm and the outdoor dinette with a small galley, barbecue and fridge.
The lower deck is open, with a double berth and another dinette area forward that can be converted to a second sleeping area. It has one head.
