Saxdor, the creative Finnish builder, just announced that it’s planning a new 460 GTC flagship, with the company’s usual twin-stepped hull but with three Mercury Verado outboards for power.
Like the previous flagship, the 400 that Saxdor launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival last September, the new 46-footer will have a full-width wheelhouse with sliding doors on each side that open to drop-down balconies that extend to about a third of the hull length. The balconies have large glass inserts, providing a view of the water even when they’re upright. In the down position, the balconies are the same level as the salon deck; they extend out so guests can walk in and out the side doors, in addition to the main door aft.
We don’t have details yet, but the 460 seems to have the same half window aft that separates the salon from the aft deck, as well as a full height door. The galley is up with a dinette and seating area on the port of the salon, with the helm console on the starboard side. The port side has a pantograph hinged door that opens to the foredeck with a large sun lounge.
The earlier 400 has an aft cabin that is accessed by lifting a section of the salon sofa. The master cabin has a double berth and a separate head and shower; it’s remarkable for its 6-foot headroom.
Saxdor has an unusual back story. It was started five years ago in Finland by Sakari Mattila, who still serves as its chief designer, working with J&J Designs in Slovania. Mattila is something of a serial boat company bounder. He started Aquador in 1994, Paragon in 2003, and co-founded Axopar in 2012. The name Saxdor comes from a combination of S (Sakari), AX (Axopar), and DOR (Aquador). Saxdors are made in Elk, Poland.
Saxdors are designed to deliver a lot of value for their price. Mattila has said, “I have always admired Italian design, American functionality, and French pricing.”
