Nordhavn 71 Designed for Adventurous Couples

The Nordhavn 71, which was introduced in 2023, was designed for adventurous couples who want the look and feel of the builder’s larger yachts yet wants to cruise without a professional crew. As an owner-operator cruising boat, the layouts and systems have been created for ease of movement about the boat, ease of mooring and anchoring and ease of maintenance.

At the Ft. Lauderdale International Boats at the end of October, I met with  Jim and Eric Leishman. Jim is Nordhavn’s Director of Design and Eric handles sales and customer relations.  We got talking about the Nordhavn 71 of which five have been delivered in the last two years and with number six scheduled to be launched in the spring of 2026.

In a phone call later, Eric told me that he has more than 2,500 miles on hull number three. He has cruised from the Nordhavn base in Dana Point, California, south to the Baja Peninsula and north to the Pacific Northwest.

Eric has spent a lot of time at sea in different boats and remarked that the 71, which carries plenty of beam and has a thoroughly modern displacement hull, is a dream at sea and on passage.

“The boat’s motion, even in rough conditions,” Eric said, “is remarkably smooth and it feels like a much bigger boat. The sound insulation is so efficient that you can barely hear the engines or the genset running. For couple’s cruising long distances and living aboard, this is an important feature.”

The 71 joins the 51 and the 625 as models that are delivered as complete boats with all systems, electronics and amenities built in. Not exactly “production” boats but semi-custom models that each has a strong family resemblance.

But, each 71 is an owner’s own unique yacht that reflects their personal style and cruising preferences. In the photos of the 71 number three, you can see the southwestern, Texas tastes of the new owners who hail from the Lone Star State.  The net result for the 71 is that you get the efficiencies and proven systems of the basic boat combined with your own decor.

As Nordhavn President Dan Streech noted on the Nordhavn website after number three was delivered, “With just three boats finished, PAE is already seeing benefits from offering the Nordhavn 71 as a mostly-complete boat. The aforementioned ease in the order process not only eliminates stress in having to make choices, it also eliminates the need for change orders…which dramatically reduces the chances for errors. From there the advantages are exponential: build time is condensed and extra costs typically associated with changes and customizations are curbed. It’s no coincidence that the first three Nordhavn 71s have been completed and shipped from the factory in just over a 12-month span. “

Modern hull design software including Computational Fluid Dynamics allow the Nordhavn design team to experiment with a wide range of hull configurations without the need to build test tank models. This speeds up the design process and gets them the most efficient hulls possible.

Eric noted, “The 71 on which I put those 2,500 miles was powered by twin John Deere 249-horsepower diesels with straight shafts instead of the single larger diesel that has been a Nordhavn hallmark since the beginning. Still, the hull is so efficient that the twin engines have the same fuel consumption as the single engine and will carry the owners more than 3,000 miles at 8 knots. Having twin engines instead of one provides the boat’s owners with redundancy and the peace of mind that comes with it.”

The 71 can be built with a choice of two accommodation plans, a three-cabin version and the skylounge or a four-cabin layout with the skylounge transformed into the fourth cabin. The Master suite is voluminous and is filled with natural light from the large hull glazing.  But there is still room for owner customization. In hull number three, the owners opted for a open flybridge with a jacuzzi on the bridge deck.

The 71 fits in the Nordhavn line between the 68 and 76 but in concept and styling it mimics the larger 80 and when aboard feels much larger than her 71 feet.
