The Fairline Targa 40 debuted at the Dusseldorf boat show last January to quite a lot of acclaim. And, it is easy to see why. The design is aggressively modern with a full-figured bow section that provides a lot of interior volume. The bow is almost plumb at the top, but then curves neatly aft and flares to deflect spray. The glazing in the topsides are embedded in a wide, curved black band that mirrors the shapes of the cabin top and the cockpit’s wind screen and hard top. It’s quite interesting looking and attractive. It seems Fairline, a venerable…

Here’s a little known fact outside of the world of marine mammologists. Every summer some 60,000 beluga whales, those cute, white mammals with huge foreheads, migrate from their winter feeding grounds in the Artic to warmer waters of Hudson Bay where they molt, feed and give birth away from the threat of orcas and other predators. Scientists who study belugas have set up an underwater cam on the back of their research vesselso they can monitor the migration and the whales’ behaviors. Recording from the cams are, of course, available for viewing on YouTube. Also, there is one cam that…

Candela, the innovative Swedish builder of foiling electric boats and ferries, has partnered the Swedish EV manufacturer Polestar to create a cutting-edge E-boat with all the style of Polestar cars. This special edition of the C8 came together as a tribute to the boatbuilder’s close ties to the car maker. The just-launched 28 footer is painted in Polestar grays and blacks and can be fitted with jet black carbon hard top. The gold-painted foils are similar to the gold accents on Polestar’s automobiles. And, the boats’ seats have the same fine, hand-stitched quality as the electric cars. While the haute…

Slovenian builder Greenline has put sustainability at the forefront as the company introduces their new Greenline 58 Fly Hybrid at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September. The 58, which is the builder’s flagship, is driven by the company’s next-generation HDrive propulsion system that harnesses diesel-electric technology to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The combination of hybrid technology with lithium-ion batteries and large and efficient solar panel arrays makes the new 58 capable of motoring under electric power for up to 20 miles at six knots. “Greenline Yachts’ new 6G HDrive draws on 16 years of constant development,” said owner…

Last week we ran a preview of the new Grand Banks 62 design which the company announced at the beginning of July. The 62 is an evolution of the popular 60. But, the 62 is not a replacement model for the 60. In the design preview, we were able to show the plans and layouts but we did not have actual photos of the boat –they don’t exist yet– to show off the details that will make it a Grand Banks. So, we thought that this week we would offer a part two to the preview by providing you with…

Now, here’s something new from the market disrupters at Uber. Uber Europe, which pioneered facilitating Uber users to book yachts for day trips or more, announced this month that the service would be expanded to deluxe resort areas in Ibiza, Venice, Paris and Greece. A typical Uber Yacht experience in Ibiza would get you and up to seven friends aboard a private Sunseeker for eight hours of touring the island as well as swimming and other water sports. It would  cost $1,600 for the day and comes with a complimentary bottle of champagne. Uber also noted that the ride sharing…

Richard Bost and his wife Julie Nariman had long wanted to travel by boat from their home in New York to Ireland and Europe to have an adventure and visit old friends from Richard’s Air Force Days. They had a budget to stay within, particularly a fuel budget of about $3,000 a year. And, they needed a sturdy offshore cruising boat that carried enough fuel and was efficient enough to motor for 400 hours. After a lot of research, Richard and Julie concluded that the single-engine Kadey-Krogen 42 was the right boat for the job.  They found a 1988 model…

British physician Dr. Stephan Weatherly had a vision for a new type of four-season, cruising and expedition yacht that could be capable of crossing oceans while being as sustainable as possible. Working with the naval architects at Chartwell Marine, Weatherly first developed and built the Archipelago 47. An aluminum cat powered conventionally with twin diesel engines, the boat has proven to be a comfortable four-season family cruiser with a 3,000-mile range. But, diesel engines are not, by definition, sustainable. In Weatherly’s view, the only practical, 100-percent sustainable propulsion option for his proposed line of cats from 40 to 80 feet,…

This year, Tiara Yachts has many reasons for celebration. The family owned and run company is marking the 50th anniversary of the Tiara brand and the new Tiara 54 EX, introduced at the 2024 Miami show, was named a Top Product by Boating Industry magazine. Tiara, based in Holland, Michigan, was launched by Leon Slikkers in 1974 as a premium powerboat brand. It soon became one of America’s leading lines of center consoles and weekenders. Tiara was not the first brand introduced by Leon Slikkers. He learned the boat building trade while working at Chris Craft in the early 1950s…

Italia Yachts, based near Venice, Italy, recently launched their first powerboat. Known for their elegant and beautifully-built sailboats from 30 to 70 feet, the move to introduce  a new powerboat stirred much anticipation in powerboat circles. The new 43 Veloce does not disappoint. A 43-foot express cruiser with a walk-around deck, the Veloce doubles as a stylish day boat that can be configured for weekend and longer cruises. The Italia Design Team collaborated with the Skyon Design Studio for the fairly radical and attractive lines of the hull and cabin. The bow was given a lot of height and thus…
