Aspen Power Cats Working on Two New Cruisers with Outboard Power, but Same Proa Hulls By Peter A. Janssen Aspen Power Catamarans is working on two new outboard-powered cruising boats, a first for the company, but they still will have Larry Graf’s innovative asymmetrical proa hulls. They also will be Aspen’s first twin-engine cruisers, and they join a growing trend to outboard power for cruising boats up to the 50-foot range. The new Aspens will start with a 3070 and a 3480 (pictured above). The 3070 will have a 200-hp outboard on the cat’s larger starboard hull providing the main…

Update on Aspen Power Cat 10,000 Mile Tour: “Life is Good” on Sea of Cortez

It would be hard to find two happier boat owners than David and Sue Ellen Jenkins, who are enjoying life on board their 40-foot Aspen Power Cat in the Sea of Cortez, about halfway through their epic 10,000 mile tour from Seattle to Annapolis. Indeed, Jenkins just sent me an email saying that Mexico is a “great place, great people, great waters. Life is good.” Their partner on the tour, Capt. Blake Eder, Jenkins’ brother-in-law and a professional delivery captain from North Carolina, flew home for a family wedding, so the Jenkins have been spending time on their boat, Knot…

New 40-foot Aspen Power Cat Reaches L.A. on 10,000-Mile Tour of U.S.

Knot Wafflen’, the 40-foot Aspen Power Catamaran that’s on a 10,000-mile tour of the United States, just reached Los Angeles, having cruised down the West Coast from Anacortes, Washington. After he tied up in Marina del Rey, David Jenkins, the boat’s owner and an entrepreneur from Annapolis, said simply that “the boat is amazing.” Jenkins and his brother-in-law, Blake Elder, a professional delivery captain from North Carolina, cruised the boat 1,230 nm down the Pacific Coast, taking 16 days from Anacortes to L.A. (Jenkins is left in the picture above; Elder on the right.) They stopped each night, spending an…

Aspen Power Cats’ 10,000-Mile Tour Already Reached Alaska, Now Heading South

Aspen Power Catamarans’ epic 10,000-mile tour is off to a good start, with Knot Wafflen’, the company’s new 40-footer, already having cruised from Anacortes, Washington, all the way up to Glacier Bay, Alaska. It’s now in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, on its way south, before ultimately circling most of the U.S. and ending up in Annapolis in October, 2018. The owners of the boat, David and Sue Ellen Jenkins, are both from Annapolis, and were looking for a major adventure after Jenkins, who calls himself a serial entrepreneur, sold Golden Malted, the largest waffle company in the U.S. Referring to…

Aspen Power Cats Launches New 28-Footer With Same Proven Proa Hull

The latest from Aspen Power Catamarans is something different: Not a cruising boat, but a 28-footer that can serve as a tender, a second boat, or a fun primary boat for running around and having fun. Whatever you do with it, the new L90 LX does have the same creative proa hull that Larry Graf created for all his larger, Aspen cruising cats, a hull that has proven be stable, fuel-efficient and seaworthy. As a tender, the L90 LX is easy to tow; it’s light in weight, only 5,800 pounds, and the twin hulls make it unusually safe and steady.…

Dreaming Large on an Aspen 40 Power Cat: 10,000 nm Around the U.S.

Dreaming Large on an Aspen 40 Power Cat: 10,000 nm Around the U.S. by Peter A. Janssen How’s this for a shakedown cruise? This May, David Jenkins, who usually cruises on his Albermarle 27 out of Annapolis, will buy a new Aspen 40 power catamaran in Seattle, and then he and Capt. Blake Eder, his brother-in-law and professional delivery captain, will embark on their “shakedown cruise” from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska, looking for an adventure. I’ve taken that trip several times and I can guarantee two things: 1) It’s one hell of a shakedown cruise, and 2) they’ll certainly find…

Aspen C120: A Cat with a Difference

The new 42-foot Aspen C120 power cat is anything but just another pretty boat. Developed by Larry Graf, one of the more creative people in boating, the new C120, like all Aspens, has an asymmetrical proa hull (think of native boats in the South Pacific), where the port side is 35 percent narrower than the starboard side, which houses the single 330-hp Volvo diesel. The point: Stability, performance and above all, fuel efficiency. Graf says the boat burns just 11 gph at 17 knots. Graf founded Aspen Power Catamarans in Burlington, Washington, in 2008; he had founded Glacier Bay Power…
