Azimut 50 Hits Martha’s Vineyard Jetty at Night. Four People on Board Not Injured

The 50-foot Azimut motor yacht named Buffalo Soldier crashed into the Oak Bluffs north jetty Thursday night, crippling the vessel and leaking diesel fuel into the outer harbor. Oak Bluffs Fire Chief John Rose said the incident happened at about 10 pm and none of the four people aboard were injured. A wave heaved the boat into the jetty, he said. The diesel slick is minor, he said but has made the rocks of the jetty slippery and unsafe to walk on. Read more: http://www.mvtimes.com/2018/08/31/boat-crashes-oak-bluffs-jetty/

A Survivor’s Story: “I’m waving at the guy, yelling, and all of a sudden, his boat was sitting on top of our boat.”

The story continues, building on one of the most memorable boating pictures in recent memory: A 37-foot charter fishing boat sitting on top of a 35-foot J/105 sailboat in calm conditions near Thomas Point in the Chesapeake, just south of Annapolis. The picture went viral, for the obvious reasons, with everyone wondering, what in the world happened here. Now, from the Capital Gazette, we have the story from the skipper of the sailboat. Charter Fishing Boat Rides Over Top of Sailboat in the Chesapeake; No Serious Injuries. Plus: First-Person Account of What Happened

You don’t see this very often. But here’s a startling picture showing the results of a collision between a sailboat and a powerboat on the Chesapeake near Thomas Point, just south of Annapolis. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. About noon on a summer Friday, Hunter, a 37-foot charter fishing boat out of Kent Island, ran into Levitation, a 35-foot J/105 out of Annapolis. Levitation had its sails up, but authorities don’t know if its engine was running. Seven people were on board the fishing boat; two on the sailboat. The fishing boat ended up basically straddling the sailboat, with its bow…

Father Runs Over 12-Year-Old Daughter in Water, Kills Her

This is a tragedy almost beyond belief. Zoe Anderson, 12, was learning how to waterski on Newfound Lake in Bridgewater, New Hampshire, where she was vacationing with her family. Her father, Sherwood Anderson; her mother, Tonya Anderson, and her 14-year-old sister were all on the boat on a family outing. The Andersons live in Highland Ranch, Colorado. At some point, Zoe fell in the water. Her father drove back to pick her up, when police say “his attention was momentarily distracted as his hat was blown from his head.” He put the boat in neutral, but it backed over Zoe,…

Out-of-Control Boat Injures Four on Indiana Lake. Police Say Alcohol Was Involved. See Video

Here’s another example of why booze and boating don’t mix. Last Saturday night, local authorities say that Dominique Effinger, 20, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was driving a 21-foot Correct Craft Ski Nautique about 30 miles an hour on nearby Lake Gage when she made a sudden “violent turn,” throwing herself and nine passengers overboard. Four of the ten suffered serious injuries, including a partial arm amputation and a fractured skull. Meanwhile, the Ski Nautique kept going, making circles in the lake, hitting a dock, even hitting the local patrol boat where Jake Carlile, a conservation officer, threw a line around…

Diver Killed When Someone Turns On Yacht’s Bow Thrusters in Palm Beach

This tragedy is almost beyond belief, and we still don’t have any details, but a diver who was cleaning the bottom of a 173-foot yacht in North Palm Beach, Florida, was killed when someone turned on the bow thrusters and he was sucked into the propellers. On His “Dream Greek Holiday,” A British Tourist Dies Riding an Inflatable Sofa

It was 5 in the evening on the sixth, and last day, of what Simon Crewe, a 57-year-old carpenter from Leicestershire, England, called  a “dream Greek holiday.” As a final treat, he and his brother David and a friend signed up for a ride on a yellow inflatable sofa pulled by a speedboat off the island of Cephalonia, in the Ionian Sea just west of the Greek mainland (pictured above). Simon Crewe’s partner, Vicki David, was on the speedboat, taking a holiday video. They had just started, when David Crewe said he heard “a massive bang,” and something hit his…

Video: Tipsy Captain Hits Palm Beach, Now Sues Town

This is hard to believe. You may remember that the captain of the 72-foot Time Out missed the inlet and ran his boat into the beach at Palm Beach at 2 a.m. after he said he had consumed a few Long Island iced teas last month. At the time, the  police charged him with boating under the influence. Now he’s suing the city, saying he was prevented from protecting his boat after the accident. Video: Need for Lights on Miami Jetty Where Fernandez Died

We all can relate to this: A night entry into a busy harbor with a lot of light pollution all around, and a 1,000-foot-long jetty off your starboard side that barely rises above the waterline. Hmmm. This is what Miami star pitcher Jose Fernandez faced last month when he ran his center console onto that jetty at a high speed about 3 in the morning, killing himself and his two companions. Watch this video from the Miami Herald and you’ll understand the problem. Yes, Fernandez probably was going too fast. Yes, authorities said he had been drinking. Yes, he…

Tragic Video: Two Dead as Cat Flips on Potomac Radar Run

This is just a tragic accident: A 36-foot cat flipped during a timed radar run on the Potomac River near Fairview Beach, Virginia. The driver and throttle man were both thrown from the boat and died. The cat had been timed at 170 mph earlier in the day. I personally how how boats travel right on the edge of control/disaster at these speeds, since I once drove a 47-foot Fountain cat 162 mph. At that speed a puff of wind, something in the water or an error in judgment can easily mean an upside down boat and catastrophe for the…
