Boston Ferry Runs Aground in Heavy Fog. Four Hurt

A commuter ferry ran aground in heavy fog in Boston Harbor, injuring four passengers. The captain told the Coast Guard he had been cut off by a passing sportfishing boat. The ferry, the Lightning, left Hull, a small town on the southern edge of Boston Harbor, at 7:30 on a Friday morning, with 81 passengers on board. Normally, the trip to Boston takes 23 minutes. But about half way through the trip, the ferry ran aground near Long Island in five feet of water. The captain said that when the sportfishing boat cut off the ferry, he had to swerve to…

Crew Member Killed by Speeding Yacht as He Raises Anchor in Cannes

A 29-year-old British crew member was killed in a freak accident in Cannes when another yacht moving through the anchorage hit the bow of his boat as he was raising the anchor. Emergency medical staff called to the boat tried to resuscitate the crewman but he suffered “severe trauma” and was declared dead. French authorities said the accident occurred about 8 p.m. on the last night of the Cannes film festival. The Minx, an 88-foot Princess motoryacht with nine guests on board (pictured above), was ”anchored and stationery” in the bay. The crew member was starting to raise the anchor.…

Car Runs Over Owner on Boat Ramp, Then Sinks Next to Boat

We’ve all seen hundreds, or more, of launch-ramp videos, where things can go very wrong, very quickly. But this one, from Port Moody, British Columbia, Canada, sets a new bar. It starts with the boat owner standing on the back of his boat on the ramp. The boat’s still on the trailer, still attached to his SUV. When the SUV starts rolling backwards, he tries to jump out of the boat, but he slips and falls. The rear wheel of the SUV hits him, the open door to the SUV hits him, and the SUV rolls into the water and…

Three Fishermen Killed When Boat Pitch-Poles Trying To Cross a Stormy Bar in Oregon

Three commercial fishermen on an old wooden 42-foot crabbing boat were killed when they tried to cross the Yaquina Bay Bar near Newport, Oregon, at night in breaking seas even as a Coast Guard motor lifeboat tried to lead them to safety. In a harrowing account, the Coast Guard said it tried to warn Stephen Biernacki, 50, the skipper of the Mary B II crabbing boat that he was drifting outside the channel, exposing it to 16-foot breakers. The Mary B II was among a group of crab boats that tried to cross the bar about 10 at night to escape a…

Owner of Miami Vice Charter Pleads Guilty in Death of a Passenger

This news doesn’t seem a surprise, but it does serve as a point of closure. The owner of Miami Vice, a 95-foot, 55-knot charter boat, has pleaded guilty in the death of a passenger who was killed by the boat’s props while swimming behind it. The owner, it turns out, hired a captain even though he knew the captain didn’t have a Coast Guard license. To make matters worse, the boat didn’t have a charter license either. Finally, the owner filmed a video of the captain snorting cocaine as they drove around Miami Beach together. Laurent Marc-Antoine Jean Maubert-Cayla, the…

A federal grand jury has indicted the captain of the tourist duck boat that sank last July during a storm off Branson, Missouri, on 17 counts of seaman’s manslaughter, one for each person who died when the boat sank. The indictment charged Kenneth Scott McKee, 51, the captain, with misconduct, negligence and inattention to duty. “The captain of the vessel always has a duty to operate his vessel in a safe manner and that’s why Mr. McKee is under indictment,” said Timothy Garrison, the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. The indictment said that McKee failed to assess…

Coast Guard Investigates Why No Warning Before 332-Foot Megayacht Hit 65-foot Charter Fishing Boat, Killing One Man

The Coast Guard is investigating why there seemed to be no warning before the 332-foot megayacht Attessa IV, one of the largest private yachts in the world, hit the 65-foot charter fishing boat Prowler at night in the Pacific south of San Diego, killing one man on the fishing boat. The Coast Guard said the accident occurred about 7 p.m. nine miles off Imperial Beach near the U.S.-Mexico border. Prowler was on its way back to its home base in San Diego after a fishing trip in Mexican waters. Attessa hit the starboard quarter of Prowler, causing extensive damage, and critically injuring Richard…

Maine Lobsterman To Plead Guilty to Seaman’s Manslaughter in Death of Two Crew

A Maine lobsterman will plead guilty to seaman’s manslaughter after his 45-foot boat turned over in a storm four years ago off Matinicus Island and his two crewmen drowned. The government says he took them out after smoking pot, attending a Halloween party, and buying 20 tablets of oxycodone. Christopher Hutchinson (pictured at top), who was 26 at the time, left the Linda Bean dock in Tenants Harbor about 1 a.m. on Nov. 31 on his boat, No Limits, with Tom Hammond, (pictured above), 27, from Rockland, and Tyler Sawyer, 15, from Waldoboro. He was told the weather was bad,…
