Family of Drowned Boy Sues Tug Operator

The family of a young boy who drowned in the Chicago River has sued the operator of a tug and barge that they claim caused a wake that capsized their boat. Victor Lobato Ochoa, 7, was thrown from the family’s 16-foot motorboat by the passing wake of a tug pushing a barge on the South Branch of the Chicago River early on the evening of last July 22. The boats were operating in a no-wake zone. The lawsuit says a report from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources claimed the cause of the accident was the “force of the wake”…

Three Teens Save Five Men in Long Island Sound

Three teenagers who were fishing on Long Island Sound just rescued five older men (including three who couldn’t swim) after their boat took on water and turned over. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) said the men were fishing off Six-Mile Reef near Clinton and Westbrook, when they saw water inside the back of the boat. It flooded the batteries, and they couldn’t start the engine. As more and more water poured in, they put on life jackets and sent out a distress call on Channel 16. Around the world, more than seven million people (including readers of Cruising Odyssey) watched the terrifying video showing a larger powerboat bearing down on three fishermen in a small boat near the mouth of the Columbia River in Oregon on Aug. 12, 2017. NTSB Report: Seacore Power Hit by Violent Conditions

The National Transportation Safety Board  just released its preliminary report about the capsizing of the Seacore Power lift boat in the Gulf of Mexico last month, revealing that the boat capsized as the helmsman tried to put its legs down when it was swept by a sudden, violent storm. The boat had 19 people on board when it left Port Fourchon, the southernmost port in Louisiana, on April 13. Miami Swimmer Sues Developer for Running Her Down

A Miami chef has filed a suit charging that a major real estate developer there ran her over with his 41-foot center console while she was swimming in Biscayne Bay, causing permanent damage to her left leg and foot. In a civil suit, Theresa May, the chef, says that Irwin Tauber, the CEO of Taubco, one of Florida’s leading developers of commercial property, ran her down in his 2020 Valhalla, powered by four 450-hp outboards (pictured above), while she was swimming near Bay Harbor Islands last April 28. Boston Man Dies When His Jet Ski Hits Moored Sailboat

A 43-year-old Boston man was killed when his jet ski hit a moored sailboat in Boston Harbor on Sunday afternoon. Massachusetts State Police said they received a call about 4:20 p.m. that a man was in distress near Malibu Beach in the Dorchester area. He had been riding on a jet ski that ran into a sailboat on its mooring. The Boston Police Department harbor unit was able to reach the man, Curtis Raper, who was unresponsive in the water. One Dead, Two Injured, One Missing in Bimini Boat Crash

One American was killed, two were injured, and one is missing after their 34-foot powerboat hit something at night near Bimini in the Bahamas. The two who were injured were flown to the U.S. for medical treatment, and the Coast Guard and Bahamian authorities were searching for the missing woman. Bahamas authorities said that officers at the Alice Town Police Station in Bimini received a distress call from a boater near Turtle Rock Cay, about two nm south of Bimini, about midnight on Friday. Man Seriously Injured When Run Over by His Own Boat

A 19-year-old Ipswich, Massachusetts, man was seriously injured on the Fourth of July when he fell out of his boat and it then ran over him. The three other  people on the boat, who also were thrown out, were not injured. After hitting the driver, the boat kept circling and finally crashed into his family’s boathouse. The accident occurred near the Third Creek Mooring field off Ipswich just before 3 in the afternoon. Popular Couple Killed When Fishing Boat Hits Jetty in Oregon

A popular couple who ran a dockside seafood restaurant in Florence, Oregon, were killed when their fishing boat hit a jetty at the Siuslaw River bar in heavy seas and capsized in the middle of the night. Wealthy Dad Charged in Boating Death of Son

Marin County Prosecutors, just across the Bay from San Francisco, have charged a wealthy real estate developer with manslaughter and boating under the influence of alcohol in the tragic death of his 11-year-old son last September. Javier Burillo Azcarraga, 58, from one of the wealthiest families in Mexico, was driving his 33-foot Targa Protector (pictured above) near Angel Island in San Francisco Bay when his 11-year-old son and a 27-year-old son were thrown out of the boat.
