New All-Electric Q30 from Finland: Elegant Lines, 80-nm Range, and Light Enough to Tow Behind Your Tesla

With its super-modern, minimalist clean lines and all-white aesthetic, the new all-electric Q30 from Finland’s Q-Yachts is designed to make a statement. It wants to be the future of boating. It already is quiet and has no emissions, almost no wake, and a cool factor that is off the charts. As one reviewer said, if Apple were to introduce a 30-foot boat, the Q30 would be it. And it performs. The Q30 is powered by a single Oceanvolt AXC20 electric motor and an Oceanvolt 30kWh lithium battery pack; a 60kWh pack is an option. It cruises at 9 knots and…

What Does It Really Cost To Drive an Electric Boat 1,000 Miles at 10 mph? Here are Some Answers from Stephens Waring Yacht Design

We all know that electric-powered boats are cheaper to operate than gas- or diesel-powered models, right? But exactly how much cheaper are they? Now the creative people at Stephens Waring Yacht Design up in Belfast, Maine, have come up with some numbers to answer that question. Oddly enough, hard figures are hard to come by. So, Stephens Waring started their research at the Alternative Fuels Data Center at the Department of Energy, which has a lot of drop-down menus with information about cars, comparing the costs of an all-electric Chevy Volt, for example, to the costs of a combustion-engine-driven Volkswagen…

Hinckley’s New All-Electric Dasher Finds a Fan in Architectural Digest

Hinckley Yachts, with their classic lines and Down East heritage, have always appealed to the rich and famous. The Rockefellers have had Hinckley sail and power boats at their places in Blue Hill, Maine, for generations. Martha Stewart had an early Picnic Boat at her place in Maine. Bob Wright, the former president of NBC, has a Hinckley, appropriately named Peacock, at his place in Southport, Connecticut. So it’s probably no surprise that Architectural Digest, the magazine that appreciates iconic design and celebrates the homes and lifestyle of people who live well, just wrote a story about the newest Hinckley,…

Forbes Tells How Hinckley Developed Dasher, Its Revolutionary New All-Electric Boat

Here’s a great story from Forbes about how Hinckley decided to develop Dasher, the traditional Maine builder’s new 28-foot all-electric boat. Unveiled at the Newport International Boat Show in September, Dasher is the world’s first luxury electric boat, powered by two 80-hp electric motors and dual BMW i3 lithium ion batteries. Development of the revolutionary boat, with a lightweight carbon-epoxy composite hull and titanium hardware, dates to a conference of industry leaders two years ago, designed to make sure that Hinckley was looking to the future. As a result, Forbes says, “Hinckley envisioned a luxury vessel free of fossil fuels…

Greenline 39 Hybrid: A Light-Filled Cruising Boat Under Diesel or Electric Power

Operating in two cruising modes, the Greenline 39 Hybrid can run under its 220-hp Volvo diesel at an 11-knot cruising speed, topping out at 18 knots, or under its electric power at 4 knots, topping out at 6.5 knots. Under diesel power, range is 1,000 nm at 7 knots; under electric power, however, range is only 20 knots. What this means is that under its green, electric, low-carbon footprint, the Greenline 39 Harbor can cruise around a harbor or two, or enter a quiet anchorage at night, silently and efficiently. Either way, the Greenline 39 is a low-profile, light-filled, two-stateroom,…
