Revitalized Northern Marine Building New 57-Foot Pilothouse Cruiser

Northern Marine, the storied builder of high-end expedition yachts, is back, with a new owner, and it’s now finishing a 57 Raised Pilothouse cruiser in its yard in Anacortes, Washington. Northern Marine was started in 1995, at first building strong commercial vessels and then earning a reputation for its robust, world-circling cruising boats. It had a lineup of models from 57 to 100 feet. But then the 2008 recession hit, and a few years later the yard suffered a major blow when a new boat capsized in an accident during its launching, resulting in a video that went viral around…

The Arksen 85 is a different kind of yacht from a different kind of company. Arksen is planning three models, 70-, 85- and 100-footers that…

When He’s Not Singing, Andrea Bocelli Loves To Go Cruising, and He Just Bought 86-foot Expedition Yacht with 6,700 nm Range

Who knew? Andrea Bocelli, one of the greatest musical talents in the world, loves to go cruising. The Italian tenor, who’s been blind since he was 12, just bought his latest boat, a steel-hulled 86-foot expedition boat built by Cantiere della Marche in 2015. Named Stella del Nord, the boat is the fourth in the Italian yard’s 86 series, and it’s the eighth boat that Bocelli has bought in the past 19 years. Bocelli told the yard he wanted to do more long-range cruising with his family, and he traded in the 72-foot Gamma named Libertas that he bought new in…

New Amasea 84 Aluminum Expedition Cat with Three Decks and 2,000 nm Range

Amasea Yachts is now building its new 84, an all-aluminum power catamaran designed for long-range cruising and exploration in the high latitudes, in its yard in Turkey. The Amasea 84 will have three decks, instead of the usual two, and will have a range of 2,000 nm. Jack Wijnants, a Belgian-born yachtsman and builder (he started another company in Malta ten years ago to build patrol and rescue boats), founded Amasea Yachts last year in Monaco because he said he couldn’t find another production catamaran to suit his needs. He wanted to cruise around the world with his wife, he…

New 49-foot Kodiak Mini-Expedition Yacht from Stephens Waring

Stephens Waring Yacht Design, the custom naval architecture and engineering firm in Belfast, Maine, doesn’t exactly follow the crowd. If you’re interested in a plastic floating condo that holds 12 for drinks, is top-heavy and gets 0.6 nm per gallon, you probably don’t need to go there. But if you love classic designs and old-world craftsmanship, combined with modern materials and technology, then you’ve found the right place. Their latest, which they write about after extolling the virtues of expedition yachts (business-like, seaworthy and serious), is a 49-foot mini-expedition yacht called Kodiak, which they say “speaks to the adventurer in…
