47th Annual Newport Boat Show: First Look at the New Cruising Boats By Peter A. Janssen The Newport, RI, boat show has always been my favorite. It’s the first of the fall show season, so almost all the new boats are there, and then, well, it’s in Newport. Enough said. This year the show, the 47th annual, runs from Thursday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 17, with most of the docks and tents at the Newport Yachting Center, but spilling over to neighboring docks; all told, some 600 boats are displayed over 13 acres. There’s also a brokerage show at…

Newport ’17: First Look at the New Boats for the Fall Show Season

The Newport, RI, boat show has always been my favorite. It’s the first of the fall show season, so almost all the new boats are there, and then, well, it’s in Newport. Enough said. This year the show runs from Thursday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 17, with most of the docks and tents at the Newport Yachting Center, but spilling over to neighboring docks. There’s also a brokerage show at the Newport Shipyard, and a wooden boat show at Bowen’s Wharf. In addition to the new boats, electronics, gear and equipment, seminars and courses run throughout the show. Confident…

Designed to be run by a cruising couple, the new Outer Reef 610 Motoryacht is spacious, fuel-efficient and easy to maneuver. Then they cruised New England waters for the rest of the summer themselves. That boat will be displayed at the Newport International Boat Show, starting Sept. 14.…

Back Cove 32: Best Under 35 Feet at Newport

The Back Cove 32 was just named Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet at the Newport International Boat Show, a major honor for the Maine-built classic couple’s cruiser. I’ve been a fan of Back Coves since I tested the very first one they made, a 26, ten years ago, and I’ve tested every model since then. The single-diesel, fuel-efficient, user-friendly themes of the brand, combined with their iconic Downeast lines, make them very appealing, and the new 32 lives up to the company’s reputation. You walk on the boat through a centerline door in the transom, and then the deck is…

One of the most famous names in boating, Chris-Craft will launch its first cabin cruiser in many years, a 42-foot Commander, at its dealer meeting this July. The new 42 also is the first in a new joint venture between Chris-Craft, based in Sarasota, Florida, and Austin Parker, the stylish boat builder in Pisa, Italy. With Chris-Craft’s distinctive lines, the Commander 42 will be powered by twin Volvo IPS 600 drives and 435-hp Volvo diesels. It will feature two cockpit areas for entertainment – one in the open area aft, and one under the hardtop, which can be fully…
