Winners of the Annual MBY Motor Boat Awards

The editors of Motor Boat & Yachting, the British magazine, just announced the winners of their prestigious annual Motor Boat Awards. The awards were for boats in six categories, and they were announced in a virtual ceremony, because of the pandemic. The editors tested all the finalists for the awards, some 29 boats, in the past year. Hugo Andreae, the magazine’s editor, said that all the finalists were “boats that I’d happily recommend to a friend.” (The Prestige 420 Fly is pictured above.) New 420 Fly: Entry-Level Cruiser in the Prestige Fleet

The new Prestige 420 Fly is the entry-level yacht in the French builder’s high-end cruising fleet, which goes up to 75 feet. But it has the same DNA, the same French styling, the same bright and warm interiors, and the same cruising comforts that you’d find it its larger siblings. The 420 comes with two staterooms and one or two heads, and various inviting social areas from stem to stern – plus up top on the flybridge. Its basic power comes from twin 380-hp Cummins, with optional 425-hp Cummins. Cruising speed is 22 knots, with a range of 210 nm.…

Docking Made Easy (Very Easy) with Raymarine’s New DockSense and Virtual Bumper

With a little help from its own brand of artificial intelligence, Raymarine just developed a new DockSense system with a Virtual Bumper zone that automates docking. It introduced the new system at the Düsseldorf boat show, and will demonstrate it on a new Prestige 460 at the Miami boat show, starting Feb. 14. Prestige, a Beneteau brand, is the first production boat company to use the new system. DockSense uses intelligent object recognition and motion sensing to help dock a boat. It relies on FLIR vision camera technology and video analytics to integrate information from the boat’s surrounding imagery with…

Life on the Loop: Heading South for the Winter – Plus Brunch at Tacky Jack’s and Pizza and Popcorn for Dinner By Peter A. Janssen This is the time of year when the annual migration of cruising boats from the Great Lakes and Midwest reaches the Gulf Coast, having moved down the Mississippi and the Tombigbee, looking for warmer weather. The movement is timed to the end of the hurricane season, for insurance (as well as safety) reasons, and means that a large group of Loopers are now gathering in the Mobile and Pensacola area before cruising farther south around…
