Pregnant Wife Saves Husband from Shark in the Keys

A pregnant wife dove into the water to save her husband from a shark attack in the Florida Keys. She was not injured, but rescue personnel, who flew him to a trauma center in Miami, said his injuries were “severe.” The shark attacked Andrew Eddy, 30, almost immediately after he slid off the back of a 20-foot motorboat on Sombrero Reef in the Middle Keys to go snorkeling about 10:30 in the morning. Eddy, from Atlanta, was there with his wife, Margot Dukes-Eddy, her parents, her sister, and her sister’s boyfriend. Several other people were snorkeling nearby at the time;…

Katharine, a Popular but Missing Great White, Found Again

Here’s some good news on the great white shark front. Katharine, a 14’ 2”, 2,300-pound great white who once had a Twitter account with 61,000 followers and had not been heard from in about a year, just resurfaced about 200 miles of the coast of Virginia. Researchers from Ocearch, the ocean and fish research organization, say that their satellite heard three pings a week ago from Katharine’s tracking device, which enabled them to establish her location. Katharine’s previous ping was on May 12, 2019. Ocearch originally tagged Katharine in 2013 off Cape Cod. That’s when they measured her length and…

How To Tell If a Shark’s In the Water. First, Take a Spoon…

Here’s some advice – with a grain of salt – from Country Living: During a family vacation to Edisto Beach, Josh Rinder of Aiken shared a one-minute instructional video on Facebook for his foolproof shark detection method. Even the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy has put its weight behind the hack, calling it a “great trick to detect nearby sharks.” In the video (below), Rinder, 33, stands at the ocean with a big spoon. It’s the flavor of the water that’s the key, he explains. First, he says, you scoop up some of the water from the ocean. Then put it…

Was Cabot, the Great White Shark with a Twitter Account, Ever in Long Island Sound? “Hello, Greenwich”

At first, the story was just too good to ignore. Cabot, a ten-foot-long great white shark, had been tracked swimming in Long Island Sound off Greenwich, Connecticut. OCEARCH, the organization that tracks marine life and that had tagged Cabot off Nova Scotia in October, said that Cabot’s tracker had pinged there, and that it was the first time they had traced a shark to the Sound. OCEARCH also created a Twitter account for Cabot, a “sub-adult’ weighing about 533 pounds. “Hello Greenwich,” Cabot Tweeted. “How are you today?” The media frenzy was immediate, and worldwide. The Daily Mail in London…

Whale Shark, the Biggest Fish in the Sea, Surfaces Behind Fishing Boat Off Charleston. See the Video

Whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, usually live in the tropics. About the size of a school bus, growing to 40 feet long and weighing in at 20 tons, they prefer warm water, migrating every spring to the continental shelf off central west Australia, where the Ningaloo Reef provides them with an abundant supply of plankton, their food of choice. So Michael Krivohlavek, 21, a mate for Daymaker Sport Fishing Charters out of Charleston, S.C., was surprised to see a whale shark surface behind his boat recently. The fishing boat was in 150 feet of water about 36…

Record Number of Great White Sharks Swimming Off Cape Cod; Vacationing New York Doctor Survives Attack

Scientists say a record number of great white sharks have been swimming off Cape Cod this summer, and one attacked and severely injured a New York doctor who was swimming off Truro on vacation, the first attack on a human there in six years. Greg Skomal, a state marine biologist who’s been leading a five-year shark study, says his team spotted 149 great white sharks off Cape Cod just in July. That’s twice as many as they counted last year, according to the AP. The sharks also are moving closer to the beach. Skomal says this may be because his…
