Palm Beach To Launch New Fast and Elegant GT50 Open at Miami Show

The new, striking Palm Beach GT50 Open, with its low lines, long sheer and elegant tumblehome, will make its U.S. debut at the Miami Yacht Show, running from Feb. 14 through 18. It comes on the heels of the successful introduction of the Palm Beach GT50 Salon Express, which was named Best New Powerboat at the Newport International Boat Show last September; the judges said the beautiful, fast and light new Palm Beach yacht was just plan “sexy.” Palm Beach developed the new GT series after it found a void in the high-performance market – a luxurious cruiser with a…

The Favors Keep Cruising: Now Down the Historic Trent Severn Waterway on Their Ranger 29

Many cruisers consider the historic, pastoral 240-mile Trent Severn Waterway the most beautiful part of the entire 5,000-mile-long Great Loop. Connecting Trenton on Lake Ontario to Port Severn on Georgian Bay, the waterway runs through small villages,  farmland and lakes, and has no fewer than 44 locks. Jim and Lisa Favors, two experienced cruisers (they’ve already completed the Loop, for example), now write about their north to south passage on the Trent Severn, including their transit of the Peterborough lift lock, which is so unique it has been designated a Canadian National Historic Site. Built in the early 1900s, the…

Zeelander Building New Z72, a 40-knot Dutch Cruiser with a Down-East Touch

Zeelander, the Dutch company that builds boats reminiscent of the classic 1930’s commuter yachts on Long Island Sound, is working on a new 72 flagship that will be launched early next year.  Leonardo van den Berg, Zeelander’s commercial director, says the new 72 carries “a sportier look” than the company’s existing 55- and 44-foot models. The bow is a bit more prominent than in previous boats, but the new 72 carries the company’s signature low profile, long sheerline, reverse transom and suggestive tumblehome that have marked the earlier models. Zeelanders have always looked a bit more Down East than Dutch.…

New Pardo 50 To Be Launched at Cannes, Following Success of Last Year’s Pardo 43

The new high-performing, head-turning Pardo 50 will be launched at the Cannes Yachting Festival, starting Sept. 11, exactly a year after the Italian builder’s first boat, the Pardo 43, was introduced there to wide acclaim. Indeed, Pardo has already sold 33 of the 43s, a significant number for a brand-new offering. Although Pardo itself is new (the company was founded in 2016), it is an outgrowth of Cantiere del Pardo, the high-end yard that has built more than 4,000 Grand Soleil sailboats since 1973. It wanted to get into the luxury, high-performance powerboat market, so it first developed the 43…

Schaefer Yachts Launches New 580 Without a Steering Wheel, Just Volvo IPS Joystick

What’s missing from this picture? Here’s a close-up look at the helm station of a new Schaefer 580 yacht with just a Volvo Penta joystick. There’s no steering wheel at all on this new boat that made its debut at the recent Rio Boat Show in Brazil. The twin 670-hp Volvo IPS800 diesels and pod drives are totally controlled by the joystick. Marcio Schaefer, CEO of Schaefer Yachts, Brazil’s biggest builder, said there was considerable interest in the wheel-less 580 at the show, calling it the biggest nautical event in South America. He said Schaefer will continue to use joystick-only…
