Ron and Nancy Goldberg got the cruising bug in the early ‘90s, when they took an Annapolis Sailing School class in the BVI. After more charters in the Caribbean, they switched to power and bought a Monk 36 to cruise the Chesapeake. After many years there, and many lessons learned (Ron says main lesson was “how not to pump out the holding tank – do not remove the hose attached to the tank itself’), they sold their house, moved up to a Nordhavn 46 named Duet, and cruised back and forth to Florida and the Bahamas.

After more years and more cruising, they moved up again, this time on the West Coast, to a Nordhavn 50, also named Duet. The Goldbergs never stop cruising. Since August, 2014, they figure they’ve traveled some 8,000 nm. The 50 has two staterooms, two heads, an almost stand-up engine room, and a supersized lazarette. They also like the larger flybridge than on the 46, as well as the extra control station in the cockpit to help with docking.

Duet is now in Mexico, and the Goldbergs plan to leave shortly for a 2,700 nm voyage to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. Duet usually cruises at 8 knots, burning 4 gph, for a range of 2,000 nm. But if they dial back to 6-7 knots, the range increases to 3,000 nm. Stay tuned. Here’s their blog so you can follow them on their way:
