Bruckmann just took the hull of its beautiful, classic Mark Ellis-designed Abaco 47 out of the mold in its plant in Ontario, Canada, so the new cruiser should be in the water by spring. The new Abaco 47, with its long sheer, low profile, sharp entry and raked windshield, is designed with the same proven hull form from the popular Bruckmann Abaco 40, which is remarkably efficient through a wide range of cruising speeds.
The new 47 can be powered either by either a single 1,136-hp CAT C18 diesel, or by two 641-hp CAT C8.7s. Top speed with the single is about 30 knots; with twins, about 34 knots. But the hull shape allows the boat to plane at the relatively low speed of 12 knots, while a full skeg and large rudder provide protection and directional stability. The 47 will have bow and stern thrusters to make docking easy.
Like most Bruckmanns, the new 47 is a modern version of a traditional Downeast design. It has a teak swim platform, teak caprails and a teak-and-holly sole for a salty look. The salon is filled with natural light and has excellent visibility all around. An L-shaped settee is to port with a teak table; it can be converted to a double berth at night. A straight settee is across to starboard. Forward, the captain and co-pilot have matching Stidd helm chairs.
Below, the master is forward with an island queen berth, lots of storage space and an en suite head with a separate shower. The guest cabin is to starboard with two single berths. Its head and shower also serve as the day head. On the port side, the galley is laid out for serious cruising, with a double sink, Corian countertops, and abundant storage areas; it’s open to the salon for greater light and ventilation.
A sliding door opens to the cockpit from the aft end of the salon. It has a bench seat aft and an L-shaped settee with a teak table on the port side. A door on the starboard side of the transom opens to the swim platform.
