For a New Charter Destination: Try the Turks & Caicos on an Axopar 37

Here’s a fresh charter idea: Try a new Axopar 37 Sun-Top with twin 300-hp Mercury Verado outboards in the gorgeous waters of the Turks & Caicos. The Axopar, named MV Bonita, is run by Ocean Frontiers, a private charter company, and it can reach all the hidden cays, dive spots and soft white-sand beaches throughout the Turks & Caicos.

The Turks & Caicos, at the southern tip of the Bahamas, are a paradise for divers, with the third largest coral system in the world. Scuba sites include a 14-mile-long barrier reef on the north shore and a 7,000-feet-deep underwater wall off Grand Turk Island.

Ernesto von der Esch, co-owner of Ocean Frontiers who leads the charter trips, is a PADI master scuba diver trainer. From the Axopar, you can scuba, snorkel or free dive, but you also can chill and enjoy the sun from lounging areas on board. The charters are all tailor-made, and you can visit local spots to eat lunch or dinner or have Ocean Frontiers provide food on board.

On full- or half-day charters, you can explore and dive around Providenciales, the largest island in the group, or cruise to less well-known spots, including West Caicos and French Cay or go all the way down to South Caicos and Ambergris Cay.

Von der Esch says he chose the Axopar for his charter operation because it’s fast, seaworthy and comfortable, even cruising through the trade winds across the Caicos Bank.  He likes the outboard power because of the easy maintenance (particularly important in remote areas), low draft, and lack of noise and smoke.

The boat itself has spots for relaxing in the sun or shade, a head, fresh-water shower, moonroof, lots of storage for water toys in the long lazarette, room to store valuables, and a swim platform for easy water access. Von der Esch says the lines of the Axopar, made in Finland, resonate with Americans, and most of his charter customers come from the U.S. Read more:
