Beneteau is doubling down on the trawler market, and is now building hull number one of a Grand Trawler 62, a long-range vessel with a full-displacement hull made for safe, comfortable (and slow) cruising.

The new Grand Trawler 62 follows on the popularity of Beneteau’s Swift Trawler line, which now runs from 30 to 50 feet. But while they have semi-displacement hulls and cruise easily in the 15-16 knot range, the new 62 is most efficient cruising at 9 knots, where it has a 900-nm range. Powered by twin 730-hp MAN diesels with straight shafts, the new 62 will be able to top out at 20 knots, the company says.

The boat is under construction at the Beneteau yard in Monfalcone, Italy, that also makes Beneteau’s luxury Monte Carlo line. And the new 62, the flagship of the French company’s trawler fleet, is meant to be luxurious, particularly for owners and guests who want to spend long amounts of time on board.

The 62 is built to cruise with six to eight people, plus two crew. It comes in a three- or four-stateroom layout, plus a crew quarters aft accessed by a private entrance. In the three stateroom version, the owner’s stateroom is full-beam amidships, and it comes with a vanity/desk on the port side and a spacious en suite head. The VIP cabin is forward, with an island bed angled so guests can see the view from the hullside windows, plus an en suite head. A third cabin, with twin beds, can convert to a double, and it has a private door to the day head.

In the four-cabin arrangement, two smaller cabins go amidships where the owner’s stateroom was, while the owner’s cabin moves to the former VIP cabin in the bow.

The 62’s salon is open and flowing, with a galley opposite the dining area; it can be closed off with an optional sliding door. The raised helm pilothouse has a reverse windshield, a centered helm seat, a bench seat to port, and a sliding door to the deck on the starboard side. An internal staircase leads up to the large flybridge.

Up top, the helm has two captains’ seats, a sun pad, an L-shaped settee that seats eight facing a dining table, and a large wet bar. There’s room aft for two sun lounges and an optional boat crane.

The Grand Trawler 62 is due to be launched early next year.
