New Six-Person Triton Sub Goes Down 3,300 Feet

Triton has just launched its new 3300/6 submarine, and the name gives it all away: The new Triton is certified to go down 3,300 feet under the water, while carrying six passengers. Triton says it’s the highest-capacity, 3,300-feet-deep certified recreational sub in the world.

The 3300/6 is designed to be launched from the garage of a megayacht or an expedition yacht, using a standard tender lift. It weighs 24,300 pounds, is 14’’ 9” long, 11’ 8” wide, 7’ 9” high, and it can carry a 1,760-pound payload. The sub can cruise at a 3-knot top speed underwater, and it can stay under for ten hours.

The spherical acrylic pressurized hull is topped by a clear dome, which the company says is “optically perfect” and free of distortion.

The cabin is large enough to give all the passengers some elbow and leg room; all the lighting, air conditioning and controls are packaged below and behind the passenger seats to keep the sightlines clear. The interior is outfitted with fine leathers and hand-finished upholstery. If you want more room, you can get the sub in a four-passenger version also.

You climb inside the sub through a large hatch that is angled to the rear for ease of boarding. The sub’s pontoon hull design keeps it flat and level for boarding. The captain’s seat at the rear of the cabin converts to access stairs for getting on and off the sub.

Two main thrusters and two vertran thrusters provide the power, with a peak of 12.5 kW each. Six banks of 20,000-lumen LEDs provide enough light for everyone on board to enjoy the views, even deep down. Read more:
